Time Slip Fiction, Romance and Historical are not my go to genre. The last book and possibly only was Narnia, and as a child it was down to the pure magical feel rather than understanding the time slip plot.
The cover of Callies book is so enticing it drew me in to open the pages and see what lay ahead.
The beautiful prose, and amazing cast of characters soon had me encapsulated within their world.
Especially Lou, and Bert, oh, how I loved Bert. How could you not want to follow the story?
Hill House was brought to life within the first few chapters, It was an important place to Louisa and her connection with the house took her on a journey she was not expecting.
Hill House, was astoundingly written about, without being too steeped in facts or stuffy.
I feel that I have had in my hands and read a book that has enchanted me; held me within the mystery of time slip. I could visualise the events and felt I was there, hiding in the shadows watching Louisa's journey.
The array of characters were portrayed so realistically especially the different Social Classes and mixing it in with how we live today gave a fascinating over view of how life has changed in the last 100 years.
The season setting added to the magic of the read, the grimness of a difficult Christmas, and the weather, it just made the scenes inside the house work even better than they would have in Summer for example. Adding bleakness, to magic worked.
This is an astounding Debut Novel, with passages that took my breath away.
I highly recommend this read, but make time to be transported and savour the words, characters and be aware your emotions will be played with. With a hint of what feels like magic you will also be lucky enough to have had a glimpse of Hill House in it's former glory and let it live within your heart.
