This has to be the most unpleasant book I have read in terms of content, it is not just a police procedural crime book, it is a horrific read.
I was hooked! and a bit disgusted with myself, that I had to keep reading. I am unsure if that says more about me than the author.
Elements of the plot, mostly Caffrey's childhood, may for some be unnecessary. for me, this game me the insight into who and why Jack Caffery was as he was. How his childhood brought him to not only be in the job he was in, but explaining how he worked.
To say there is an extremely dark, sadistic side to the crimes, is a bit of an understatement. They are gruesome, and also inventive.
Hayder uses technical medical jargon, which was slightly more in depth than most crime novels, however, you don't need to understand this totally, to get the gist of what is going on.
An exceptionally difficult mind blowing read, and will for a different reason to most be one of my All time favourites, but tucked away in my brain to not contaminate it.
